Jakub Roztočil

Bio

Jakub Roztočil (*1979) is a graduate of the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague (1999–2005, monumental art, prof. Aleš Veselý), Jakub Roztočil works with generative processes in real time, through which he recreates fundamental aspects of the universe. The dialogue between the mechanical and biological world produces an image that simulates a shared and interconnected parallel to nature, music, and – in the end effect – the universe itself. Roztočil creates his paintings by applying layers of paint on a rotating canvas using a homemade mechanism. In interaction with musical rhythm, this kinetic machine generates a “visual synthesis,” meaning a graphic record of the harmonic relationship between variously interrelated vibrations. These works can be summed up using three key words: sound – matter – harmony. His sculptures are three-dimensional experiments, and their installation is a prime expression of art itself, for they reveal the fundamental relationships between matter and space, and these are integrated into Roztočil’s attempts at creating a final, balanced work. In 2021, Trafo Gallery published a catalogue of his works titled What’s the Frequency?
