Bio

After studying gold-and silversmithing at SUPŠ in Turnov in 1989–1993, Michal Cimala (*1975, Havířov) attended the Academy of Arts, Architecture, and Design in Prague, where he graduated from Vratislav Karel Novák’s metal and jewelry course (1994–2000). From 2006 to 2013, Cimala worked as an assistant in Jaroslav Róna’s sculpture course, followed by the same position with the sculptor Lukáš Rittstein (since 2014). He works in a number of artistic fields, including painting, sculpture, and interior design, and also creates fully functional musical instruments (on which he plays and composes his own music) that mix elements of design and sculpture and anticipate the forms of the future. In his paintings and sculptures, Cimala explores his fascination with and anxiety from the present day, which is an augur of an uncertain future that in his eyes can be progressive technological miracle, human apocalypse, or empty wasteland.
