Jakub Roztočil
The work of Jakub Roztočil (*1979) can be briefly characterized using the key words sound – matter – harmony. Since he is primarily a procedural creator, this triad with other variables would also be applicable dialectically. Sound in various forms, e.g. tone loops, is an impetus and a starting point for him. Matter is represented by paint, mat, sculpting material and machine. The result of the investigation should then be harmony, for which the principle of chance and error entering into the staged process is essential. It imitates the conditions which are associated in the intellect with the cosmic order.
Most of Roztočil's works are created with the help of a device without the touch of a human hand, as a kind of living dialogue between the artist in the role of demiurge and the machine as a mediator of thought. He is interested in the adventure of manifestation and emanation using mechanics. In this case, he is the perceiver, but also the one who is part of what transcends him - nature and the universe. It evokes being in non-being. It is the author's desire to search for existence, one's own place in the world and culture using generated art. Jakub Roztočil asks himself ontological questions when he tries to define and also question the flow of linear time. He places great emphasis on the importance of rhythm, regularity and cyclicity. He is interested in what will be disturbed if randomness appears in the complex wheel of the universe in which a person finds himself during the creative process. The movement here is a paradox, as it uses the physical properties of the drawn medium and notices coincidences.
His approach is very close to the principles introduced into sculpture by, for example, Constantin Brancusi. At a certain stage of his work, he resigned from conventional sculpture and consciously entered into a dialogue with nature by trying to find new forms that would be in complete harmony with the environment, without tending to be a commentary on events in space and time.
The exhibition is accompanied by a bilingual publication summarizing the author's work in recent years, supplemented by a text by Adam Hnojil, the curator of the exhibition, and art historian Barbora Kundračíková, together with an author's text by Jakub Roztočil about himself.
