The paintings by the young artist Laura Limbourg (*1996) bring an exotic dimension to the Czech art scene. However, the role of said dimension role is deliberately ambivalent, contradictory, provocative and sometimes even irritating. The image is often not what it seems at first sight. The narratives chosen do not report on the innocence of far off paradisiacal lands, to which one might still voyage, escape and disappear in the manner of Gaugin in order escape from the all-consuming machinery of an accelerated Western society and self-alienation, but to the fact of their domestication by a globally pervasive economy and liquid capital. In what appear initially to be naive, sentimental and romantic images there are often acts of cruelty that best disclose the shadows of global civilisation that it skilfully casts over the most remote parts of the planet, only to display its sunnier countenance elsewhere.
